About 80 schools entered the contest with judges viewing nearly 4,300 photos. Two Mount Si students’ were judged as Select Finalists (less than 1 percent of the total entered per category received this distinction) and six others received Select honors (less than 10 percent of the total). The top six places were chosen from those advancing to Select Finalist.

Mount Si’s Select Finalists’ awards were won by Senior Jonathan Harrington (Abstract) and Freshman Natalie Werner (Color). Earning the Select awards were Senior Maura Murphy (Portrait), Senior Alex Pease (Animal), Senior Journie Kirdain (Animal), Sophomore Rachel Mallasch (Landscape), Freshman Avery Dahline (Animal) and Freshman Sam Egan (Animal).

The eight awards doubled the amount won last year by Mount Si students and this year’s totals were the most since 2009 when Mount Si finished 9th in the state.

Race to Nowhere

05/15/2012

You are invited to see Race to Nowhere, the award-winning documentary film that highlights the unintended consequences of our pressure-cooker culture and educational system.  Monday, May 21st at 6:30pm in the MSHS Auditorum.

The screening is hosted by SVSD PTSA Council, and is free to all parents, educators, students, and members of our community. Order your ticket(s) NOW to ensure a seat for this thought-provoking documentary!

Synopsis of RACE TO NOWHERE
: A concerned mother turned filmmaker aims her camera at the culture of hollow achievement and pressure to perform that has invaded America’s schools. It appears to be destroying our children’s love of learning and feeding an epidemic of unprepared, disengaged, and unhealthy students. This remarkable new film shines a light on the price our kids pay for this “race to nowhere.” Cheating is commonplace, stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant, and ironically, young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired. RACE TO NOWHERE is a call to families, educators, experts and policy makers to examine current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing and leading citizens in the 21st century.

On Thursday, May 17th, 2012, Mount Si High School will be conducting a “Mock Crash” assembly as part of our Think and Drive Week to educate Juniors and Seniors about the dangers of drinking and driving and other high-risk behavior as prom and graduation approach. In association with Snoqualmie Police, local Fire Departments, Eastside Fire and Rescue, Bellevue Medics, and the Washington State Patrol, ASB will be sponsoring an assembly at 8:50AM.

The purpose of the event is to stage a realistic automobile accident investigation and medical response, where alcohol, drugs and driving have combined to produce tragic consequences. There may be a disturbance to neighbors due to sirens, police and ambulance presence, but there will be no actual emergency. Parents are welcome to attend this important assembly.
